Build a Wheellock!

Wheellock building class with William Baxter:

A small original “Bressican” pistol wheellock (6 ¾” long) has been added to the inventory of locks available to build in the class.

5 1/2-day & 9 day classes – Building the “Alden” wheellock or a “Bresician” pistol wheellock. The 5 ½ day class will run in conjunction with the 9-day class. Both classes will start on the first day of the seminar. Participants will be instructed on wheellock construction, terminology, & design. Heat treating will be covered in the class as the participants will harden and temper the wheellock components. Lock sets, barrels & stocks will be made available for the participant to purchase.

Wheellocks are virtually a mystery to most builders. Come and learn about critical dimensions, period correct safeties, double set triggers, or auto pan closing features of locks. Student wishing to build a TRS kit or another type of lock, please contact the instructor. Be aware that no welding & machining services are available to create or repair parts at the class site.

Building a wheellock lock takes time. Stocking and placement of components takes additional time also. Students in last year 9 day class were able to get the lock almost fully functional in that time. Final shaping of parts and polishing was not done at the class as that is very time consuming. My goal is to send student home with a functioning lock by the end of the 9 day class. A returning student will have priority in the registration que, to ensure that they will have space in the class.
